Friary Mill Bakery win 2nd place at the World Pasty Championships!


Plymouth’s voted best pasty winners of 2016 take part in the World Pasty Championships 2017 held in the Eden Project, Cornwall.

Celebrating the traditional Cornish pasty recipe, as well as some more unusual varieties. Competitors came from all over the world from the likes of Canada to Australia.

The categories were split into two sections: Cornish pasties (made in Cornwall following a traditional recipe) and open savoury categories for pasties with creative fillings or pasties from outside Cornwall.

This is because the Cornish pasty enjoys a special protected status (Protected Geographical Indication), and only pasty makers based in Cornwall who make pasties in a traditional manner and follow a traditional recipe are able to label their products as Cornish pasties.

Friary Mill Bakery managed to take second place in the Open Savoury Company categorie for our Curried Chicken pasty. Competing against Cornish Premier Pasties’s Red Thai Chicken pasty that won first place and West Cornwall Pasty Co’s Green Thai Curry pasty that came third place, we are extremely proud and honoured to have taken part in such a competitive categorie.

Our Production Manager, Justin Johnson states ‘Taking part in this competition was a great experience for our Company. We’ve never entered a worldwide competition before, so winning 2nd place has given us the determination to take part in more of these events. There was an incredible atmosphere at the Eden Project, we will definitely take party again in the future’
