Friary Mill started as a single shop and bakery on Gasking Street, Plymouth, in 1988. Opened by Karen Milner and Philip Gardner, Friary Mill quickly developed a strong reputation for its high-quality fresh, handmade products, using the very best West Country ingredients.
As our reputation grew, Friary Mill needed to expand to accommodate the growing demand for fresh, locally made products. As a consequence, we relocated our production to a new site in Cattedown, Plymouth in 1998 to meet this demand.
Twenty nine years on, Friary Mill now have opened a total of ten shops and bakeries across Plymouth and Ivybridge. We are recognised as the destination for handmade Devon pasties, freshly filled rolls, breakfast baps and hand crafted cakes and sweet treats.
Alongside our retail shops, we introduced our retail delivery service to reach our more remote customers. Those working in Plymouth’s industrial estates, offices and retail parks can enjoy delicious Friary Mill products, brought to them daily. We have recently added a new retail van to our fleet which will supply businesses in, amongst other locations, the Newnham Park Industrial Park in Plympton and the Burrington Way Industrial Estate in Honicknowle.
Friary Mill are well-established competitors within the local food to go market, and compete against multi-national brands. We offer great value to both loyal and new customers, who help support a reputable, local bakery, that’s dedicated to freshness and excellence.
Such is our reputation, we were nationally recognised at the National Supreme Product Championship, held in Birmingham, in 2010. Our award winning pasties are still handmade in Devon and baked off throughout the day for maximum freshness.
Friary Mill has also won multiple awards such as Confectioners of the Year at the Bakery Championships held by Bako in 2016. Winning the Plymouth Herald’s competition of Plymouth’s best pasty 2016, an ethos of ‘made for locals, by locals’, and a range of products all handmade in Devon, we’ve established Friary Mill as the bakery of choice for locals and visitors alike.
Despite our growth, we remain as committed to our values as we did on day one. We want to be seen as a pillar of the community, delivering the freshest pasties, cakes and savouries to the population of Plymouth. We want to keep Plymouth and Devon’s population going, and will only use the best products to do so.
At Friary Mill, we are passionate about our products and strive to ensure that only the best ingredients are used for our pasties, cakes and savouries. That’s why we use locally sourced, fresh produce, bursting with Devon flavour.
Each ingredient is delivered to our bakeries on the day, to ensure that the fresh, crisp flavour isn’t lost. With potatoes pulled straight from the ground, rich meat cut by the finest butcher and pastry handmade at Cattedown, every ingredient is cooked in Devon.
Westcountry meat has full traceability back to the field, making sure that we, and you, know exactly what you’re eating.
We’re proud of our food heritage and are proud to use whenever possible Devon-sourced ingredients in our pasties, savouries, cakes and more.
Some of the awards our produce has achieved include:
Our Curried Vegetable Pasty (suitable for vegans) came 3rd in the World Pasty Championships in 2019
Our Danish Pastries, bread and pasties won “Best in Class” at this years CBA Western Bakery Championships (2018-2019)
To create the best tasting products, not only should we use the best ingredients but we also need the best people to help us serve our loyal customers. We credit our success to the support and commitment to each and every member of the Friary Mill team.
